Public Notice: Temporary Diaz Beach Closure

Posted on Sat May 23, 2026.

A week of unrelenting rain and strong winds battered Mossel Bay's coastline between 6 and 12 May, causing devastation along a stretch of almost 2km of beach on Diaz, including dune erosion, and collapsing stairs.

The primary dune along Diaz Beach serves as the coastline’s first line of defence against storm surges and high seas. Its stability and effectiveness rely heavily on deep-rooted indigenous vegetation, including coastal thicket species, which play a vital role in dune-binding and erosion control.

Recent storm activity has resulted in the collapse of the stairs and fencing providing direct beach access to complexes such as Beach Club and La Palma, leading to temporary restrictions on beach access.

In the interest of public safety, and to allow for clean-up operations of debris and restoration planning, the Mossel Bay Municipality has temporarily closed the beach to public access until further notice. (Only the beach is closed - not the Diaz Beach Residential Area).

We would also like to address misleading images and videos currently circulating on social media and in certain press releases. Many of these have been taken from ground-level angles that create the false impression that nearby properties are situated directly on the dunes and are in immediate jeopardy. This portrayal is inaccurate and misleading and reader comments are completely taken out of context.

We remain committed to providing our guests with accurate and transparent updates regarding beach access and related developments. We can confirm that no buildings or structures have been damaged by the recent storms, and all bookings remain confirmed. Guests can continue to enjoy their stay safely and comfortably.

Mossel Bay continues to offer many beautiful alternative beaches and attractions for visitors to explore during this period.

We thank all guests for their understanding and cooperation and rest assured that we will contact guests directly should any circumstances change. We kindly encourage guests to contact us directly with enquiries and not rely on information shared on Social Media by parties who are not physically on the affected building premises.
